After 31 person months, dozens of artery thickening pizzas and many many epic late nights, today we revealed our biggest ever project, the WLD mobile web platform.

Since May our engineering team have been working to create a series of RESTful API services that provide access to member and site data. Meanwhile our developers and user experience team have been building a Rails app that uses the API to provide a mobile web front-end to our White Label Dating platform.

This morning 197 of our biggest sites around the world became mobile-enabled: visitors who previously saw the full desktop site on their mobiles were automatically relocated to the new platform. You can try it yourself. Visit Singles 365 on your mobile phone to see a mobile site in action.

The project represents our first major consumer-facing Rails app and also the first system we’ve launched to be hosted in the Cloud. We’ll follow up with some background to the architecture in the new year when the dust has settled.

I’d like to thank all the team for their hard work and time put in over the duration of this project and especially in the last few high pressure weeks. The end result marks a fantastic end to 2011 and I’m looking forward to toasting their efforts at tomorrow evening’s Christmas party!
